Perfume that doesn't give you a headache
Headaches from perfume are common and rarely come from the scent alone. Here's what triggers them, and how you can keep wearing a fragrance you love without feeling ill.
What triggers the headache?
The most common cause is quantity and proximity: the perfume sits right under your nose, on your neck or wrists, and you breathe it in continuously for hours. Strong, sweet or heavy fragrance notes make the effect worse.
The alcohol in perfume evaporates quickly and creates an intense wave of scent in the first few minutes – that's often where the headache begins.
Four tricks that help
Cut back to a single spray, and apply it lower on the body than the neck.
Choose lighter fragrance families: citrus, tea and light musk instead of vanilla, amber and heavy oriental notes.
Avoid spraying in the car or in small rooms – scent becomes many times stronger in enclosed air.
Don't layer several scented products at once.
Move the scent away from your breath
Fragrance jewellery holds the perfume in a porous ceramic disc inside the bracelet or hair tie. The scent is released slowly over 12–24 hours instead of in one powerful wave, and it sits further from your face than a spray on your neck.
For many people, that's exactly what makes the difference: the same perfume, but in a lower, steadier dose.
When should you get it checked out?
If fragrance regularly gives you headaches, nausea or breathing difficulties, you should raise it with a doctor. AMBRA is a piece of jewellery, not a treatment – but it offers a gentler way to wear the scent you love.
